There was a slow but steady flow of reforms, a cautious opening up of press freedoms, the release of some political prisoners, and Nobel prize winner Suu Kyi rejoining the political process. The EU and US lifted sanctions. The World Bank will lend to Myanmar for the first time in 25 years. The economy was crippled by sanctions, it is now open for business. But Obama pointed to ethnic violence, insurgency, and political prisoners in jails. It is not a picture of complete democratic transformation.
